Basically, an airless sprayer works by pumping paint at fairly high pressure, up through a house and out of a very small hole through the spray gun tip. The nozzle is designed to break up the paint evenly by creating a fan spray pattern of tiny droplets over the surface. Tip sizes and pressure levels can vary, meaning the rate of which the paint fans out of the tip can also vary. This all means that for larger painting projects (such as fences, roofs and house interiors or exteriors) doors with slats and jobs where an even finish is important, an airless sprayer is the most efficient way to apply paint.
No matter the size of your decorating project, we’ve got the gear to help you get it done. You can easily book your paint sprayer online and then pick it up from your local Hirepool branch. If you want more information about these pieces of gear after reading this guide, reach out to the local Hirepool team.
You would use this unit when applying paint over large indoor and outdoor areas. Hiring an airless spray painting unit from Hirepool means you can minimise potential overspray and decrease refilling time due to the more economical application. This means more time to spend on your other DIYs!
Using a compressor with your air spray gun has a lot of benefits to one that is airless. They tend to be a lot gentler, meaning they cover surfaces more evenly and decrease the chances of patching. Though compressors are less commonly used, they are very handy for specialist jobs.
Your first step is to assemble the airless paint sprayer according to the manual instructions that come with your unit. If the instructions aren’t quite making sense and you don't feel confident about getting started, then the friendly team at Hirepool can take you through the manual and help to answer any questions you may have.
Once assembled, check that the unit is switched off. Plug the residual current device (RCD) unit into the power supply, then plug in the extension lead into the transformer or RCD and Airless sprayer unit (as a safety precaution, check that the extension cord does not exceed a 15 meters in length).
Turn the pressure regulating and relief valves anti-clockwise until they can no longer turn, then insert the suction and return hoses into the paint/lacquer you are planning to spray. Finally, if not already secured in place, select the preferred nozzle size for your job and insert into the spray head and switch on the motor.
To start with, prep your paint. Using paint at normal consistency is usually too thick and will quickly clog up the filter. Dilute paint according to product specifications, typically found on the paint tin or provided with the product.
As with any spray on product, what you gain in ease of application and broad even coverage, you may lose in precision. Overspray can easily occur, creating a fine spray of paint where you don’t want it. Make sure to cover areas you don’t want to paint my taping off, using drop cloths and covers, or working in the right outdoor conditions. Most common overspray mishaps happen when you spray through fence palings and into a neighbour's yard, or the wind changes, and your car or yard gets a fine coating.
Prime the pump. Slowly turn the pressure regulating knob clockwise to release the pressure and get paint/lacquer flowing. When the paint being returned to the can via the return hose is free from any bubbles, then the pump is primed.
Test the pressure. Slowly turn the relief valve clockwise until it can no longer turn and wait for the hose to fill with material. Depending on the material you are spraying, you will need to adjust the pressure accordingly. Using the gun's trigger, spray into a handy waste bucket or container until you are confident that the unit is spraying evenly and at the desired pressure. The key to a good paint job is an even, patchless coating over the entire surface, so it’s important that you are happy with the pressure and evenness of the spray - it can make a big difference when it comes to your results!
Paint a test patch. Whether you have or haven’t used an airless spray paint gun before, it’s recommended that you do a test spray on a scrap surface, piece of cardboard or paper first to get a good practice before starting on your surface. This will help you to get a good feel for the technique, and correct any issues you might occur before you start on your planned area. Practice makes perfect!
Spray the surface. Keep your arm moving at a constant speed, and even distance away from the surface you are painting. We recommend holding the spray tip so that it sits approximately 25-30cm away from your surface. As the surface changes shape, make sure to keep the spray gun at the right angle to keep that constant 25-30cm distance. Note that you should be moving your entire arm back and forth (or up and down) rather than just your wrist. When you need to stop the spray, make sure to release the trigger while your arm is still in motion to avoid concentrated, patchy areas of paint.
Though mundane, it is important to clean and clean and clear out your paint spray gun unit by pumping out the paint from the sprayer and the airless hose. If it's left for too long, it may harden in the sprayer, which can lead to malfunctions and defects, so It is best to clean the paint spray gun immediately (10 - 15 minutes) after you have finished painting.
As a safety precaution before cleaning, switch the unit OFF and remove the suction hose from the paint. Close off the relief valve and set the valve position so that it's lined up with the SPRAY setting. Switch the unit back ON and start to pull the trigger of the spray gun in order to pump through the leftover paint/coating residue from the suction hose, high-pressure hose and the spray gun into an open container/waste bucket.
Once you have removed as much leftover material as possible, immerse the suction hose and the return hose into a container filled with water or cleaning agent. Repeat the previous step of pulling the trigger, now running the cleaning agent through the sprayer until the cleaning agent going through the hose and into the container runs clear. This process may take a while, but it avoids damaging the paint sprayer and keeping it primed for future use. So, it's best to be thorough here.
Attempting to clean the airless sprayer once the paint has hardened is a difficult job, so save yourself time by cleaning the unit sooner rather than later.
Clean the tip of the sprayer thoroughly with an appropriate cleaning agent so that no coating material remains. Give the outside of the airless spray gun a good wipe down from top to bottom. Your sprayer is now clean!
