Ask anyone that’s worked with concrete before, and they’ll tell you it’s hard yakka, and there’s a real art form to it. It doesn’t matter whether you’re using a small concrete mixer to lay a concrete driveway on the weekend or pouring a large foundation on the worksite; using the proper technique and equipment is a must. Two vital pieces in the arsenal of someone that works with concrete are a concrete mixer and concrete vibrator. Without these pieces of masonry kit, your job may take way longer than it needs, and you could end up with a sub-par finish.
At Hirepool, we have a tough-to-beat selection of concrete and masonry equipment for hire. This includes electric concrete mixers, towable concrete mixers, concrete wheelbarrows, and of course, both electric concrete vibrators and petrol concrete vibrators. In this guide, we’ll take a deep dive into both concrete mixers and concrete vibrators to help you get the best result possible. Afterwards, you will not only understand why and how to use this gear but also why it can be beneficial to hire this equipment instead of buying it. Here are the main points:
The benefits of using a concrete mixer
The benefits of using a concrete vibrator
Safety gear for using concrete mixers and vibrators
How to use a concrete vibrator
How to choose the right concrete mixer and vibrator for your job
Let’s get into it!
Trade businesses like BPS Concrete have been using our masonry gear for years to get ahead of the game. Sure, you can use a large paddle in a wheelbarrow or bucket, but choosing to hire the equipment you need, like a concrete mixer, comes with many benefits.
The get the ideal consistency of concrete really is a balancing act. You need the perfect mix of ingredients, including:
As you’d imagine, mixing all of these requires a lot of work. No matter the size of your job, it will require a lot of elbow grease to do so manually. A concrete mixer takes the hard work out of the mixing process, saving your precious elbows, shoulders and lower back.
Time is money, especially when you’re running a trade business. Similarly to our last point, mixing concrete with a paddel can take time. You don’t want to cut corners in the mixing process, as this can mean you have a sub-par end product. Using a portable concrete mixer or even a concrete mixer truck for the bigger jobs means you can save valuable time. Weather is a big factor in masonry, so sometimes, a mixer can be the difference between winning the race against Mother Nature or not.
Kind of like baking a cake (but tasting nowhere near as good), if you don’t mix your concrete correctly, you can end up with a clumpy or inferior end product. There are so many great ideas on how you can use concrete, but if you don’t get the fundamentals right, you could, quite literally, not set a solid foundation. If your mix isn’t right, your concrete may crack under pressure or be less durable in general.
We wish every concrete job were easy to get to, but unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. Concrete and cement are heavy, so the easier it is to access your work site, the better. Sure, for big commercial jobs, you may need a large concrete mixer truck, but sometimes, your truck may not be able to get near where you are working. A small concrete mixer or portable concrete mixer can be great when it comes to accessibility. If you are planning to pour a driveway, read our guide on driveway DIY what you should know.
To start with, what is a concrete vibrator? Basically, a concrete vibrator works to remove air bubbles that can get trapped in concrete during the pouring and mixing process. These bubbles are sometimes known as honeycombing. Whether you use a petrol concrete vibrator or an electric concrete vibrator, this tool has many benefits.
If air bubbles are left in concrete, it can greatly affect its durability and strength. A concrete vibrator helps to make your concrete more compact, and therefore it’ll stand the test of time. If you’re working in construction, it can help you to meet concrete building standards.
Top tip: Concrete strength is shown through MPa (megapascal unit). Basically, it shows the maximum load your concrete can take.
Regulations aside, the stronger your concrete is, the longer it will last. No one wants to be redoing or filling any cracks due to a slight tremor or a heavy drop on your concrete’s surface. Concrete could last up to 100 years if mixed and poured properly and looked after.
Top tip: The ratio of ingredients may change depending on the type of concrete you’re working with. But it’s worth noting that the higher the strength of the concrete you’re after, the longer it will take to cure (harden).
As with any equipment for hire, safety needs always to be the top priority when it comes to masonry. This is no different when it comes to using concrete mixers and concrete vibrators. No matter the gear size, whether a mini concrete mixer or a bigger towable concrete mixer, you need to wear the correct personal protective equipment and follow the proper safety procedures. This is to prevent any accidents on site, including concrete burns and the effects of silica dust that can both be nasty. Personal protective equipment when it comes to concrete mixers and vibrators includes:
In general, you want to have as much skin covered as possible when working with concrete. As well as that, it’s vital to follow the pre-start safety checks and operating instructions that come with each piece of equipment for hire from Hirepool.
We have an extensive video on working with wet concrete, but here is how to operate and use a concrete mixer specifically. Sure, the process may be slightly different depending on whether you’re working with a small concrete mixer, towable concrete mixer or even concrete mixer truck, but the fundamentals are the same.
Before you even start up your concrete mixer, you need to carry out pre-start safety checks. Your specific concrete mixer will come with its own unique pre-start safety checks, but they will include:
Pre-start safety checks ensure everything is in working order before you start. All mixers at Hirepool are regularly serviced and in top nick, but safety needs to be a top priority.
Powering up your concrete mixer will be different depending on whether you’re using an electric concrete mixer or petrol. As mentioned, don’t power up the mixer until you’ve finished the pre-start safety checks.
Firstly, you’ll need to turn on the fuel and the stop/ start switch. You may also need to engage the chock if you're starting cold. Once everything is switched on, move the throttle to about the halfway position. Now that everything is in place pull the start cord like you would when starting a lawn mower. Once it’s powered up, release the chock and you’re ready to go.
Electric concrete mixers can sometimes be easier to start than petrol concrete mixers. Assuming your residual current device or transformer is plugged in, connect your extension cord from it to your mixer. Turn the power on, and your mixer should automatically start.
The art of mixing concrete and the best technique will depend on what cement you’re working with and your desired end result. However, how you use a mixer is usually the same. Once you've decided on your mix radio (this will be on the cement bag), it’s important not to overload your concrete mixer. Never put your shovel in the mixer’s bowl when mixing, and never leave your concrete mixer unintended.
Top tip: If the mix is too dry, the concrete will work its way up to the top of the mixer before falling down in dry clumps. If it’s too wet, the concrete won’t reach the sides of the mixer as it turns.
We have an extensive guide on how to pour concrete. But, to summarise, you’ll need to follow steps, including:
Once you’ve finished mixing your concrete, follow the stopping after use instructions on your given concrete mixer and clean your mixer well to avoid the concrete setting in the machine.
Comparatively, both a petrol concrete vibrator and an electric concrete breaker are easy to use. In saying that, you need to ensure you know how to use it properly for quality and strong finish.
At Hirepool, we have three main types of concrete breakers;electric, battery and petrol. Each comes with its own instructions for use and pre-start safety checks. However, across the board, pre-start checks include:
These checks ensure your concrete vibrator performs to a high standard and avoids any damage or accidents.
Although the starting procedure for the different concrete vibrators is different, they’re all relatively simple.
Only turn on your concrete vibrator once it’s in the wet concrete. Then, you’ll want to work your way around the wet concrete as you visibly see the concrete settling as air bubbles are released. Be sure to keep a steady stance to stay in control at all times. After you’re done, power down and switch off the relevant taps and switches. Ensure the concrete vibrator is shut off before removing it from wet concrete. Then, let the concrete vibrator cool down and clean it before the concrete sets.
There is no one size fits all approach to choosing a concrete mixer or concrete vibrator. Considerations that may affect the type of mixer or vibrator you choose, include the size of your job and the location of your job (how accessible it is). At Hirepool, we have you covered with a wide range of masonry equipment, including concrete mixers and concrete vibrators for any task.
When it comes to mixing concrete, we make the process easy with our reliable options, including:
Our concrete mixer towable is a fantastic option for smaller jobs around the home that perhaps are far away from power outlets.
Top tip: If using a towable concrete mixer, you mustn't travel faster than 50km. This is in part because the mixer doesn’t have suspension.
Depending on how accessible the job is and the amount of wet concrete you’re working with, we have a wide variety of concrete vibrators for hire at Hirepool. Popular models include:
A concrete mixer and concrete vibrator are both vital tools in the arsenal of anyone working in masonry.
